Alright guys, so I’m not really clear about how I’m going to do this but I’m going to give it my best shot. I’m thinking about choosing the first option just like everyone else in class. So I am not sure about what topic I should choose. Some of the topics that i’m thinking about choosing for the peer reviewed article are maybe climate change or maybe an article about teens versus smoking. I don’t really know yet. But, I’ll probably figure it out while I am writing this. Anyways, once I choose my article topic I have to figure out what genres I’m going to change it into. For my younger audience genre, I think that I would like to change my article into something like a rap. I think that it would be pretty cool because I like to listen to rap music sometimes, and I think that if I get the lyrics just right I could make some really well educated article into a really entertaining thing. However, I would really have to condense my article. For example, if I was to try and rap about climate change I would really have to focus on just one or two problems. Such as drought in certain areas or the amount of rainfall certain areas are getting. I also have an idea, maybe I could make some kind of music video out of it, that would be pretty cool. I don’t know about that though, that seems pretty hard. I think that this would be a good genre, because making up a rap like this and putting it to a sick beat could make this super long boring essay into something that could be fun and informative. I know most people will think that, “oh, it’s just another cheesy rap trying to be cool.” But, I think that I could prove them wrong.
Now, I have a couple of genres that I am thinking about picking for the older audience. I have my backups like the newspaper article, or like a magazine article. However, I was thinking that maybe one idea could be those commercials you see with the “in the arms of an angel” song playing and like sad puppy dog eyes everywhere. I think that would be fun, to talk about climate change and be all like, “for just 50 cents a day you could save the world.” I think this pertains to the the more adult audience because they are the ones who have the money.
Another idea that I am thinking of is a genre that is like one of those cheesy romantic novels. You know the ones that your mom reads and have the very sexual pictures on the front. It’s not porn but it’s pretty close. Anyways, maybe I could write a chapter of it and make a picture of the cover. For example I could draw the world in…. you know what, this is a pretty weird genre. I don’t know I liked the idea at first but now it’s kind of weirding me out. I might go with it. But I would like some opinions on it too.
So, I think that I have some sort of heading here. If anybody reads this I would like to know what you think about the genres I chose, and do they have enough to write about? That is all I have for now, and I hope that I can pull this project through and hit it out of the park.
I like how creative you’re trying to get with the WP despite any possible criticisms you might face. I think once you narrow down a topic, your genre’s and how to execute them will fall into place immediately. As soon as I chose a topic I instantly thought of genres I wanted to do. The ideas are a domino effect. As for the rap genre, I think that’ll be really cool and fun. It could be challenging because the lyrics and the whole beat thing…but I you can do it. It’s a very clever idea, and has lots of potential. It’ll definitely be entertaining. I LOVE YOUR ADULT GENRE IDEA. I always see those commercials and they make me so sad haha. But I think that’s super outside the box-y, no ones talked about that idea. You’re headed in the right direction with the way you want to do things, so just narrow down your choices and the rest should fall into place. Goodluck!

ReplyDeleteOmg when you started talking about the porn novels I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. Anyways, I really like your first two ideas. I think that the rap would be really cool! If you're worried about it being cheesy you could make it into the genre of cheesy educational songs, I feel like we all know the songs that teachers make to teach of stuff but are super cheesy. Also the sad commercial is right on target. Climate change is a serious issue and it is pretty sad but you could make it funny too if you wanted to!
Your ideas are creative and sound very fun. If you could pull off rapping about the climate I would have to give you an applause because I have no idea how to make that sound appealing. However, it can be done. Also the genres you are considering to appeal to adults seem cool too. I personally like the commercial idea better. In your thoughts it would have been nice to know more about how you would actually structure and put together these pieces of work in those genres. It gives the reader an idea of how you will make these things actually appeal to the intended audiences.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you find a good topic. However, your idea for the younger audience is super cool. I would have never thought of doing a rap as on my transformations. Picking a rap gives you so much freedom. A question I have though is how are you to relate the rap back to scholarly article? One difficulty of a rap is that most of it has to rhyme. So it would seem difficult on how you would tie the two pieces together without hurting the flow of the rap. Also, how are you going to organize the rap? Is it going to be a story that goes from start to end or is it going to be a form? For the older audience the newspaper and magazine articles are great backups. Newspaper articles tend to be pretty straight forward in writing since they start with introducing the topic, give information about the topic and end with a summary. So if all else fails a newspaper article is a great way to go.
ReplyDeleteLuke,
ReplyDeleteIt’s tough for me to give feedback if you haven’t settled on the “what you’re transforming” part yet. Whatever topic/article you choose will have a significant influence on the new genres that you choose to create.
A rap tune is a perfectly fine transformation, but you’ve got to have reasons for it. Why is this a purposeful transformation? What about rap/rap songs can help bring out the “essence” and “big ideas” of your scholarly journal article? You might find out that an “album review” is a more suitable transformation for whatever reason—why? Well, you can quote other songs/albums, you can reference other writers/reviewers, you can rate it, you might even be able to have users comment on it if there’s a discussion board forum at the bottom—if these, somehow, help you capture the spirit of the scholarly piece, then maybe that’s a better option. (FYI, I’m not suggesting you don’t have mad rap skillz!)
The same considerations apply for the older genre—whatever you choose needs to be done purposefully. I strongly recommend finding a scholarly piece FIRST and THEN thinking about the possible transformations.

Hey, Luke! I don’t think I have ever heard someone rap about global warming or saving the polar bears, so I will be so stoked to hear you do so (if you end up choosing that topic, that is). I am not sure how well you will be able to translate a scholarly article into this genre, seeing as they do not really have much (or anything) in common, but I am sure you will figure it out. As for your idea for the older audience genre, I think you have really come up with something unique. So, were you thinking of making an actual video, or were you just going to create a script? Though you did not really give a super clear outline of what your plans are going to be, I can tell you are going to have fun with it; looking forward to see what you create!
ReplyDeleteWow this is such a cool idea, I am a little jealous. A rap about climate or teen smoking fits perfectly together. And the idea about the Sarah Mclachlan song is really neat/ unique idea. I thought it was great how you extracted the essence of the scholarly article in both an effective and interesting way. The essence is the content, which makes sense, and the content is used well in both genres. Both of the genres, older and younger, seem to make sense in terms of the prompt given, as in they connect to the scholarly article in a meaningful way. Which is awesome. And both of them seem to be entertaining both to read and to write which is good for you I suppose. Just make sure that you pick a good article, since that will probably make or break your ideas. Overall, I think that you picked a good idea that fits into the prompt nicely, good work!!
